History
In 1918, staffed by six Sisters of Charity B.V.M., St. Dorothy
School opened its doors as a place to help eastern European
immigrants raise their children in the traditions of their
Catholic heritage. St. Dorothy School remained an
institution of faith and education for these hard-working
families for over thirty years. As neighborhood
demographics began to shift during the 1950's and 1960's, St.
Dorothy continued to thrive becoming a school that provided a
sound educational foundation for children of African-American
families. Faithful to its rich tradition and core
Catholic-Christian values, St. Dorothy continues to be blessed
with the presence of Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed
Virgin Mary, who replaced the Sisters of Charity B.V.M. in 1979.
Today, celebrating 90 years of service, St. Dorothy School
remains an educational pillar in the community serving many
families from the Grand Crossing/Chatham neighborhood and
broader Chicago area. Its mission lives in each boy and
girl student whose family seeks an opportunity for their child
to have a quality life - rich in truth, compassion, and
knowledge.
