Testimonial

“I came to Chicago two years ago and chose St. Dorothy after many referrals from different parents and friends. They said St. Dorothy was a school of mission that sets high academic standards for its students to be successful in life. Thank you for helping to make my dream and my daughter’s dream come true here at St. Dorothy’s.

College Graduate - 2005:
Nina Hickland - College of Engineering, Southern Illinois University
One of the "Twenty-Five Most Distinguished Seniors" - individuals who have enriched the University community with their active involvement in all facets of campus life.

The following is an article written by Ryan Rendleman for the Daily Egyptian periodical.

STUDENT ROLE MODEL TO OTHERS:  Graduate student Nina Hickland has gone above and beyond her responsibilities

As passers-by greet Nina Hickland outside the Starbucks in the Student Center, she's quick to respond.

focusing on her friends, it seems easier for her to avoid talking about herself.

Hickland, a 22-year-old graduate student studying electrical engineering from Chicago, is modes when talking about her accomplishments, but it is clear from speaking with her and others that she excels in her field ob study.  Mandara Savage, assistant professor in the Department of Technology, said many people look up to her as a model student.

Hickland came to SIUC after being invited by the Minority Engineering Program, asn academic support organization to increase enrollment, retention and graduation rates of minority students in engineering.  After taking some basic survey course, she said she was hooked.

"When I came to college I wanded to learn how to design cutting edge technology," she said.

Electrical Engineering seemed a natural choice for her because she always had an interest in math and science, she said.  During her college career; she has had many internships and is now the president of the SIUC chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.

In the summer of 2005, Hickland had an internship with IBM in Vermont.  She said it was a great opportunity because she could see technical development.  In addition, she was able to be around some very talented engineers and see the lessons she has learned in the classroom applied to real life.

Recently, Hickland was involved with the Department of Justice over certain fellowships the government claimed were racially exclusive.  As a recipient of one of the debated fellowships, Hickland took a proactive approach to make students aware of what was happening, going beyond any of her responsibilities to get other involved , Savage said.

Hickland said the ordeal, where the government threatened to sue the University if it did not open up the programs, was a time of confusion because she was unaware how the process would affect her.  A recipient of the Bridge to the Doctorate fellowship from the National Science foundation, Hickland, said she support the fellowship because it affords many students the opportunity to go to advance their education, she said.

Tiffany Battle, a junior studying English education from Bellwood, said she has know Hickland for three year, and she has seen how her friend has been an inspiration to many people.

While Hickland is quiet at times, she has the leadership abilities to step up when it is needed.  She said Hickland lends her hand to student in the Minority Engineering program lab, even though it is not her job, because she is giving.

"I hope to have an impact on someone like Nina has had on me."  Battle said..

Nichelle Hickland - Prairie State College - Summa Cum Laude
