A volunteer tutor for at least eighteen years at St. Dorothy School, Ms.
Virginia Coffey is everyone's friend. She especially is the
mother, grandmother, friend, tutor, mentor and lover of her first grade
children. Virginia is known to keep exact records of each of her
children as they progress in reading and math. A short little
lady, with a ready smile, Virginia sits in a child's chair in a
non-threatening manner, as she tutors. She has helped countless
boys and girls develop better reading skills in first grade which
accounts for their success in the upper grades. Whether it is
rainy or snowing, Virginia is there at 9:00 each Monday with a cheery
'good morning'. Her hours of tutoring are beyond counting, but it
is the joy she brings to the school that can be counted. No number
of accolades could be enough for all the service she has given to St.
Dorothy's.
BE VOLUNTEER
It is a known fact that children learn more easily when 'someone cares'.
That someone can by YOU! (Gifts and Talents Inventory)
VOLUNTEERS provide the individual attention that children need, that
extra pair of hands, eyes, ears and big hearts. Will you consider
being one of these very important people who love and serve our
children? Rewards....
Here's how you can help.
-
You choose the time and day for your convenience.
-
You choose according to your gift & talent your area of expertise.
-
You may even choose the age range appropriate for you
Types of work:
-
Tutoring in academic areas: reading, math, spelling, etc.
-
Helping children memorize prayers.
-
Provide drill on math facts, using flash cards or some other
motivational device provided by the teacher
-
Ensure safety of children by directing traffic at the corner.
-
Helping and supervising children before and after school outside.
-
Assist with cheerleaders and/other sports.
TUTORING PROGRAM
TEACHERS – VOLUNTEERS
AIM OF THE PROGRAM:
-
Provide individual attention to
students in academic areas.
-
Assure safety to students coming to
and leaving school
-
Assist in the sports program
-
Be an extra set of hands to the busy
teachers.
-
Provide strong male and female role
models for the students
PREPARATION FOR THE
VOLUNTEER
-
Use a pocket folder with assigned
work in it.
-
Have the folder in a definite place
where the volunteer can pick it up easily when she or he comes.
This eliminates distracting the teacher-learning process in the
classroom.
-
In order to cut down on disturbances
in the classroom, organize each day the name of the students who
will be going to the volunteer, so when one comes back, the other
goes. This can be listed on the chalkboard whichever way you find
most convenient.
-
To reduce discipline problems and get
the most out of the time a child spends with the volunteer, it is
recommended that they be given individual help for about 10 to 15
minutes.
-
Inside the folder put whatever you
want the volunteer to do:
-
Spelling list, vocabulary words,
word list, reading, work sheets, flash cards for math facts,
blank paper and pencil for volunteer use. A class list in the
folder, pencil and paper would be helpful also.
IN CASE OF NO SCHOOL
CANCELLATIONS OF
CLASSES, ETC. be sure to inform the volunteers so they do not make a
useless trip to the school.
PREPARATION FOR THE
STUDENTS:
-
Explain what a
volunteer is: a person giving time to them…no pay. Their love,
kindness and learning are the volunteer’s pay.
-
Teach them to greet the
volunteer with “good morning” or “good afternoon”
-
Teach them to always
say “thank you” when they finish a lesson.
-
Teach them to listen,
try hard and respect the adult.
